What is SPPG?
The primary goal of this project was to produce a comprehensive report that assessed the current status of the school-to-prison pipeline in the State of Georgia.
Who is Included?
Our goal was to include people from all regions and ethnic backgrounds in Georgia, who are represented in Georgia's prison population.
The Results
Womb-to-Prison Pipeline
The data suggest that the pipeline leading to prison for many Georgians begins many years prior to school. Lack of access to adequate healthcare during pregnancy begins that process.
Full Report & Recommendations
Our primary recommendations are to: 1) Expand Medicaid in Georgia and 2) Offer emotional and mental healthcare to students during the school day. Click the picture below for the full report.
The SPPG research project was primarily funded by the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (GCDD). The mission of GCDD is to bring social and policy changes which promote opportunities for the spectrum of people with developmental disabilities, as well as their families. The overarching goal of this project is to produce a comprehensive report which assesses the current status of the school-to-prison pipeline in the State of Georgia.
Additional goals included: the completion of exploratory research that provided insight into correlations between school disciplinary policies, student developmental disability determination, student demographics (i.e. age, grades, socio-economic status, and race/ethnicity), and the escalation of disciplinary actions (e.g. verbal warning, in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, expulsion and/or recommendations to an alternative setting) taken by school officials.
